The centre is working on improved technology to detect spurious drugs, according to joint secretary in the ministry Arun Panda. "The Health Ministry is keen on building its capacities across the country...It is also working on improved drug detection technology to weed out spurious medicines from the market," he said.
He also urged pharmaceutical companies to join the fight to detect fake drugs as "it is their reputation also, which gets affected due to such drugs". Panda was speaking at the conclusion of the two-day international workshop 'Patient Safety and Drug Detection Technology' organised by the government in collaboration with World Health Organisation (WHO) and Partnership for Safe Medicine (PSM) here today.
According to officials, to strengthen rules regulating clinical trials, the government is considering independent auditing of fatalities during such tests. The provision would be notified soon along with important recommendations on the quantum of compensation to be given in cases of deaths during drug trials, they said.
Panda said the government will add 100 more inspectors to the current strength of 70 inspectors in Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), the drug regulatory body in the country.
It would be imperative to note that not too long ago a parliamentary standing committee hauled up the country s top drug regulating agency for the lack of regulation in clinical trials and paucity of drug inspectors.
