In an attempt to reduce illegal kidney trade and create more transparency for a kidney donor, the government drafted few guidelines that determine the criteria for receiving a kidney from a cadaver donor, as reported by The Times of India. As per the norms, the patients who require a kidney transplant will be registered by the hospital through an online process. Here's everything you need to know about a kidney transplant.
The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), with the support of the health ministry, will maintain the registry of patients requiring a transplant. Depending on the condition or the urgency of a kidney transplant patient, they will be marked under a 'priority' and 'active' list. The draft guidelines, issued by the health ministry seeking public comments within a fortnight, also stated that allocation will be done first based on city waiting list. "If no recipient eligible in city waiting list then allocation will be done to state and then to other states in the ROTTO (Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization) and then to other ROTTO nationally," the draft said. The patient can register for inclusion in the waiting list through a registered transplant hospital. The treating physician of the hospital shall make an evaluation (based on medical history, the current condition of health, and other factors) and decide if the patient needs a transplant and meets the criteria to be listed. For a kidney transplant, other than blood group, main criteria is the time since the patient is on regular dialysis. Similarly, for other organs, criteria are different based on medical history, the current condition of health, and other factors. Here are 10 things you must know if you are planning to donate organs.
