Amidst the scare of Zika virus reaching India, here s some good news. Health Minister J P Nadda recently announced during the Question Hour of the Lok Sabha that till date, not a single case of Zika virus has been reported in India, according to media reports.
The announcement came as a relief especially because dengue-hit states like Maharashtra, Kerela, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are on high alert about Zika virus as the same mosquito spreads both the viruses.
During the Question Hour, Nadda further said that government and other agencies are constantly monitoring the situation to ensure that there is no outbreak of the virus in India. (Read: Is India at the risk of Zika virus?)
Other than this, the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) has issued advisories to blood banks and even blood donors all across India to prevent the transmission of the virus through blood transfusion.
Zika virus is a disease caused by the Aedes mosquitos and the symptoms include mild fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, headache and can last for up to an entire week. In fact, US researchers have found that Zika virus can also cause stillbirths. The Ministry of Health also tweeted that there is no need to panic on Zika virus disease, but Indians need to be alert about travelling to affected countries.
