With the year 2014 winding down, Google Play has released a list of e-books that were most downloaded. And at the top of the list is the realistic fiction novel by John Green -- The Fault In Our Stars. The book did really well, and so did the movie. A romantic comedy that revolves around a young 16-year-old Hazel who is suffering from thyroid cancer that has spreads to her lungs and 17-year-old Augustus Waters who lost his leg to osteosarcoma.
The two teenagers meet in a cancer support group and bond over the fact that Hazel's condition is critical and her parents want her to live life like a teenager and not spend it visiting hospitals. As the book progresses Augustus falls in love with Hazel while she tries to avoid him due to her delicate health condition. A good read, the book will definitely warm the cockles of your heart. Here is a little you need to know about thyroid cancer.
What is thyroid cancer?
This is a condition where cancer cells form in and around your thyroid gland. Since this gland is responsible for regulating a number of your bodily functions, a cancer of this gland can result in a number of symptoms like having a constant cough, pain around your neck, difficulty breathing and you might notice a swelling or lump around the area in your neck. While this condition has a high rate of cure if caught early in young people, the elderly who suffer from this form of cancer might not do so well. As for the cause, most doctors don't know what causes this condition but it is believed that repeated exposure to radiation might cause this type of cancer.
