Google Doodle celebrates Nobel Laureate Robert Kooch's research on tuberculosis

Today's Google Doodle is Robert Kooch who first found out that tuberculosis was caused by bacterium and was infectious and not an inherited disease.

The Google Doodle today celebrates Nobel Laureate German physician Robert Kooch who was awarded the Nobel prize for Physiology or Medicine on December 10, 1905 for his work in tuberculosis. Known as the founder of modern bacteriology, it was Robert Kooch who first found out that tuberculosis was caused by bacterium and was infectious as opposed to the common belief then that tuberculosis was an inherited disease. Main symptoms of TB are severe cough that lasts for three weeks or longer, bloody or discoloured sputum, night sweats, fever, fatigue and weakness, pain in the chest, loss of appetite, and pain during breathing or coughing.

He established in his scientific research in 1882 that Mycobacterium tuberculosis was the cause of tuberculosis. He also tried to develop a drug to treat tuberculosis later on but was unsuccessful. Robert Kooch was working with Berlin s Imperial Department of Health in the 1880s when he became interested in tuberculosis, a widespread disease then throughout the world. Public health agencies were determined to find the cause and treatment of this dangerous disease which was widely thought to be hereditary. Robert Kooch s historic work led way to much more research in the study and treatment of tuberculosis. Here are some ways you can prevent tuberculosis.
