In their recent study breakdown, the European Society of Cardiology during the ESC Congress 2024 summit in London revealed on Thursday that sleeping longer on weekends may lower the risk of heart disease by 20 per cent.
Sleep deprivation can result in serious diseases including decline in cognitive functions and mental health. Lack of sleep also plays a negative role in declining heart health. However, the surprising revelations at the ESC Congress 2024 leaves us in relief. You can finally wake up late in the morning without feeling guilty.
According to the research, people who sleep longer on weekends and wake up late in the morning may have a lower risk of heart disease by one-fifth.
"Sufficient compensatory sleep is linked to a lower risk of heart disease," said study co-author Mr Yanjun Song.
Many surveys have revealed in the past that mostly adults are sleep deprived, sleeping less than 5 hours. Amid this, sleeping longer on weekends can be a great compensation for their inadequate sleep throughout the week.
"The association becomes even more pronounced among individuals who regularly experience inadequate sleep on weekdays." said Mr Yanjun Song.
The study conducted on 90,903 participants revealed that those who struggle with sleep deprivation daily and compensated for that by sleeping extra on weekend had 20 per cent reduced risk of heart disease.
