'A society that gives importance to their health continues to thrive,' he said at the launch of the country's first institute dedicated to glaucoma and retina problems here.
Set up by Eye Q, a chain of eye care hospitals, the super-specialty centres offer the latest technology and medical skills to benefit people suffering from complicated cases of glaucoma and conditions arising in the retina.
It offers services like comprehensive screening examinations, eye pressure tests and intricate surgeries.
'His Holiness has advised the citizens to take care of their eyes and we hope that his message is well received everywhere in the country,' said Ajay Sharma, founder, Eye Q Hospitals.
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a disease condition that is the result of a number of mechanisms that produce increased pressure within the eye. This elevated eye pressure causes damage to the eye nerve over time. Unfortunately, the damage caused by glaucoma to the eye nerve is irreversible. There are no symptoms associated with most forms of glaucoma, a reason why it is also referred to as the 'silent thief of vision. (Read: Glaucoma - causes, treatments)
