Gestational diabetes is a condition in which a woman without diabetes develops high blood glucose levels during pregnancy. Poorly controlled gestational diabetes can lead to overweight babies which can make vaginal delivery difficult and increases the chances of a C-sec delivery. The problem faced by the mother are also increased like high BP, preterm delivery and miscarriages. Babies need special care after delivery as babies are at risk of glucose levels going too low and jaundice. All women should be screened for gestational diabetes and if diagnosed with gestational diabetes following tips will help for a favourable outcome, says Dr Kusum Sahni, Senior Consultant- Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

1. Diet: Most of the gestational diabetes patients will be able to control their glucose levels by modifying their diet and increasing physical activity. It is better to take a qualified dietician s advice. Instead of three regular meals, you can divide into six small meals and reduce your carbohydrate intake. It is important to replace simple carbohydrates with complex carbohydrates. Protein intake is to be increased as it is the building blocks.Increasing fibre in the diet also helps to keep glucose level under control. Here are few simple steps to prevent gestational diabetes.

2. Activity: Regular physical activity also helps to keep the glucose levels under control like walking for 20-30 mins after every meal is a good enough option. Another advantage of walking is that it prevents excess weight gain during pregnancy and keeps you active. This type of activity will not harm you and your baby if there is no other complication. The activity can be build up gradually.

3. Monitoring blood glucose levels: Monitoring your blood glucose levels regularly is mandatory for delivery. The frequency of monitoring the blood glucose levels will be advised by your doctor. If diet modification and activity (walking only) fail to control your glucose levels than you have to take medicines i.e. tablets or injectable insulin. The glucose levels should be checked after delivery till the levels are normal. The glucose levels of baby is also checked for first 24 hours to see if the glucose levels are not too low. The risk of developing diabetes in later life also increases so it is advisable to follow a healthy diet and active lifestyle to maintain a healthy weight.
