Four-year old Tasneem Jafri, whose father Tariq died of dengue is still fighting for her life at the BYL Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central. Her mother is also admitted at the same hospital. Her father was the fourth dengue casualty in the city. They caught the virus from one another. A tax agent from Malwani, 32-year-old Tariq became the fourth victim of dengue in the city. Docs said that Tasneem's condition is critical. She is suffering from fluid accumulation in her right chest and breathing problems.
Tariq's death came as a shock to physicians because of the unusual time for the mosquito-borne illness to strike. Figures with the BMC had earlier shown that congested localities in south Mumbai like Byculla and Worli were the dengue hotspots.
But the head of BMC's epidemiology cell, Dr Mangala Gomare, said, dengue mosquitoes attack during the day and the areas where the victims reside may not give a correct impression. 'People may be getting infected at their workplaces or anywhere in between.' The number of dengue cases has fallen and from 242 and 237 cases in Sept and Oct respectively, the count is down to 166 in December.
