Forget pork, here are dietary do's and don'ts for hypertension

Just like diabetics, people suffering from hypertension have to follow strict dietary practices. And more importantly red meat is a strict no-no. But not anymore as according to a recent study published online in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, you can include lean and unprocessed pork in your diet.

Here s a brief overview of DASH diet

Known as Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension is recommended for people who are at high risk of suffering from high blood pressure. This diet not only aids in weight loss (if you are overweight or obese) but also helps in lowering the risk of other associated illness like diabetes and heart disease. It includes

  • Low sodium intake
  • High potassium intake
  • More fruits and vegetables
  • Moderate intake of nuts, chicken and whole grains
  • Limit intake of sweets, red meat and alcohol

Apart from these, here are few diet tips to manage hypertension from our experts

  1. Reduce intake of all animal products
  2. Eat less oil, ghee, margarine, Vanaspati, etc
  3. Avoid all processed foods
  4. Restrict coffee
  5. Get enough Vitamin D from sunlight and fortified foods
  6. Choose good fats like olive oil, ricebran oil, fish and flaxseeds
