breast cancerFor the first time in India, NGO Breast Friends along with Women's Cancer Initiative (WCI) of Tata Memorial Hospital will conduct a conference of breast cancer survivors in Pune on October 6 and 7. This conference is not about doctors but about patients. More than 150 survivors are expected to take part in the event.

"Based on true stories of grit and determination, the first-of-its-kind guidelines will be prepared so that women get practical information on how to cope with concerns related to breast cancer," says Dr Shona Nag, one of the founders of Breast Friends, Pune. "Advances in medical care are helping women get through a cancer diagnosis successfully. In fact, there are almost one million breast cancer survivors in India today. The diagnosis and treatment of cancer, however, can cause problems, both on physical and emotional front, for survivors and those who care for them," she added.

The conference will have educational sessions for survivors regarding recent updates on surgical, medical and radiation therapy of breast cancer. A walk has also been organized on the second day to observe the breast cancer awareness month.
