Guillain-Barre Syndrome In Mumbai: 53-Year-Old Man Dies From GBS, Total Death Toll Rises To 8
Guillain-Barre Syndrome in Mumbai: According to recent news reports, a 53-year-old man has succumbed to symptoms of Guillain-Barr Syndrome (GBS) in Mumbai on Wednesday. This marks the city's first death report from this rare disorder. The total death toll in Maharashtra has now surged to eight. The link behind this one particular case has not been confirmed yet. Reports state that The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is expected to find out the cause and link of the case with the ongoing outbreak in Maharashtra.
The 53-year-old man had reportedly been on ventilator support at the civic-run Nair Hospital for some time. Following his admission to the hospital, his symptoms had begun to complicate after which he succumbed to the infection.
The man's family said to the media that he had travelled to Pune for one day after which he started experiencing symptoms of an illness. He was then admitted to the hospital on January 23. They said that he was experiencing 'progressive weakness,' which is also one of the hallmark symptoms of GBS. A senior BMC official said, "We are investigating the matter to determine if there is any connection between this case and the outbreak in Pune."
This GBS death case comes after Mumbai reported its first case in a 64-year-old woman recently. The woman was reportedly facing symptoms of diarrhoea and fever followed by ascending paralysis a characteristic symptom of the syndrome.
What is Guillain-Barr Syndrome (GBS): GBS is a rare autoimmune disorder which has been making its rounds in Maharashtra especially in the cities Pune and Mumbai. Due to this disorder, the body's immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system which includes the spinal cord and brain.
Symptoms of GBS: Symptoms of GBS can progress very fast starting from the onset of weakness or tingling in the lower limbs and then it spreads upwards. From there GBS can lead to difficulty walking, muscle weakness, and in severe cases even paralysis and death.
Recovery: Many people do recover from GBS, but recovery can take months or even years. Some people may experience lasting effects like weakness, fatigue, or numbness.
