First Guillain-Barre Syndrome Death Reported From Kochi In Kerala
A 58-year-old man from Kerala has succumbed to the rare Guillain-Barre syndrome making it the first death case from the state. According to reports, the man was a native of Ernakulum, Kochi and he was under treatment at Kottayam Medical College. He reportedly passed away due to the disease on Monday. Guillain-Barre syndrome has been making its rounds in India and has claimed a considerable number of lives. Few days ago, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu also reported one death case from each state along with 17 cases in Andhra Pradesh. The country has reported around 14 deaths due to the disease and countless cases. He first death cases was reported from Pune, Maharashtra in January.
The rare Guillain-Barre Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder and a neurological disorder with impact ts the body's immune system causing it to attack the peripheral nervous system. This means, it can impact the brain and the spinal cord thereby risking paralysis.
Maharashtra witnessed one of the deadliest outbreak of Guillain-Barre Syndrome in the state especially in Pune city. More than 200 individuals were affected along with 11 death cases as of February 18. About 16 patients required ventilator support during treatment, says reports.
The caseload of this disease spiked very suddenly and sparked concerns among officials. However, according to recent reports the situation has improved and the rate of cases have gone down. As of February 25, the city has only reported one new suspected case of GBS indicating a decline.
While Maharashtra experienced a significant outbreak, other regions in India have reported fewer cases. A study published in 2013 estimated that approximately 138 GBS cases are seen annually across seven major teaching hospitals in India, with about 75% of cases occurring in adults.
