First Case Of New Mpox Strain Detected In New York

New mpox variant detected in New York: A new strain of mpox has been confirmed in New York by the New York Department of Health on Tuesday. The confirmation of another new strain adds to the global concerns over the spread of mpox and the variants about which we know very little.

According to US CDC, the United States had confirmed three cases in the country from the states California, New Hampshire and Georgia. The cases confirmed were from the clade Ib strain. The agency also noted that these three cases are not linked to one another. The case recorded in New York is now the fourth mpox case recorded in the US.

Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is a viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It belongs to the orthopoxvirus family, which also includes the virus responsible for smallpox. Mpox was originally found in animals (hence the name "monkeypox"), but human infections can occur when someone comes into contact with an infected animal or person.

Symptoms of mpox are similar to smallpox but generally milder. They can include:
