Union Finance and Defence Minister Arun Jaitley recently underwent a gastric bypass surgery for diabetes management at Max Healthcare, following which he lost 17 kg in a span of 3 weeks. In a routine check up post-surgery, all his tests showed normal results.
Resuming work after getting discharged didn't seem to have worked for the minister. He had to skip a public meeting on September 22 and had to be re-admitted to Max, as he was suffering from respiratory infection. On Sunday, he got shifted to a special isolation facility at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Although he has recovered from the infection, the doctors have advised him rest for a few more days to recover completely from the infection and prevent recurrence of infection.

The surgery isn t for everyone. Dr Goel told TheHealthSite.com, The procedure is advised for those patients who are at least 25-30 kg overweight with a BMI which is 32.5 or above. People with severe diabetes, hypertension or obstructive sleep apnoea associated with obesity are also likely candidates. Women who have irregular periods and are unable to conceive due to obesity can also opt for the surgery. The surgery is also very effective for type 2 diabetics since it increases insulin resistance and helps control blood sugar.
