Around 400 employees of Masina Hospital in Byculla protested on Friday over salary delay. The angry workers forced the hospital administrator out.

'The management has been delaying payment for 4-5 months. They tell us the delay has something to do with the shutting down of pathology lab. We don't see the connection. We staged a protest after first shift. The hospital administrator came to talk to us but we cannot stand her anymore and will not let her in tomorrow also,' a protester said.

There are fears of the hospital shutting down. Over the last few years the hospital has suffered an accumulated loss of Rs 21 crore, the authorities said. Its pathology lab had to shut down two months ago due to funds constraints. 'It's not just the ward boys or nurse the remuneration of consultant doctors have been getting delayed too. We released salaries for the workers from our savings. The unions' protest prevents us from taking the necessary steps to improve the situation,' Dr Rohinton Dastur, the hospital's medical director said.

The hospital is known for its latest and advanced burns and mental health care facilities. 'Looking at the volume of patients, one can easily say that all talks of losses are baseless. There is no explanation for paying salaries after the first two weeks of the month have passed by,' one of the employees said. They have also been demanding a 20% bonus for Diwali, the employee added.
