Most people have the perception that a diet high in fat, is bad for health. While, this perception may be justified considering the high rate of obesity and heart disease in today s youth, a new study has found that a diet high in a certain type of fat can increase metabolism and be good for your health!

A team of nutrition scientists at Texas Tech University discovered this, after performing experiments on genetically modified mice. The discovery is not insignificant to public at large, because it could lead to supplements and diet regimes that will increase metabolism and decrease muscle fatigue in humans.

The scientists were curious about the enzyme called SCD1 present in the skeletal muscles of obese people that broke down saturated fats. To test its potential, they used a genetically modified mice whose muscles could constantly produce the enzyme.

The result was that their exercise capacity was introduced, their metabolism went up, and their energy consumption too went higher. (Read more: Experimental drug promotes weight loss by boosting metabolism)
