In a recent and unfortunate incident, actor and singer, Farhan Akhtar injured his left hand while shooting a fight sequence for his film, Wazir. The incident took place when he got hit at a sensitive spot on his hand and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was diagnosed with medial epicondylitis or 'golfer's elbow,' a condition which strains the tendons of the elbow. Due to this injury he was unable to move that hand at all. However, Frahan who is known to be fit otherwise is recovering with the help of some painkillers and ice compression and elevation. Here are 5 such similar injuries that players should avoid.
About medial epicondylitis or 'golfer's elbow'
This condition is usually associated with hand or racket sport activities and sometimes in case of other throwing activities like bowling too. This condition arises when the elbow tendon is prone to be stressed. An inflammation of the tendons is caused as it is attached to the forearm. As a result, the muscles and tendons are damaged and leads to excruciating ache in the elbow area.
How to avoid this injury?
Strengthen forearm muscles
To strengthen the forearm muscles, specially in case of golfing, it is needed that you are conscious enough to slow the golf swing. This is a precaution against the shock and stress that can be caused in the arm while hitting the ball.
Hand exercises
Hand exercises like simply squeezing the tennis ball even for 5 minutes in one go can be effective enough to strengthen these muscles. You could also try wrist curls with a light dumbbell. Begin with holding the dumbbell right at the end of your fingers and curl the weight towards your palm and then lift the weight only an inch or two higher. Do this 10 times on one arm and the same on the other. You can also know more about other conditions like Osteopenia, here.
