Keeping up appearances is no longer just a woman's prerogative. Men too are constantly becoming more aware of grooming techniques and are trying to ape their favourite celebrities.
Following stars like David Beckham, Brad Pitt and George Clooney, more men in the UK are choosing to get beard transplants. A full beard is very much a statement look and many want to fill in bald patches or thicken wisps of hair creating their own designer stubble. .
SIMILAR TO HAIR TRANSPLANT
Dr Akriti Mehra, MD Dermatologist Enhance cosmetic & Aesthetic clinic explains a beard transplant involves transplanting hair, typically from the scalp to the beard region. 'Men usually go for this type of procedure to thicken the beard they have or fill in patchy areas.
It is similar to a typical hair transplant procedure, and the hair can be shaved or styled in any way after a particular period of time. It's also possible to 'create' sideburns, a goatee, or a moustache through this technique.'
AN INCREASE IN DEMAND HERE
Dr Viral Desai, aesthetic & cosmetic plastic, laser, reconstructive surgeon, DHI India & CPLSS who uses a technique called Direct Hair Implants which is minimally invasive, says he sees about one case a week here.
'Younger men in their 20s and 30s don't have facial hair growth in certain areas like the bridge between the moustache and beard. They want to copy stars like Arjun Rampal and Anil Kapoor. Depending on the area, the procedure can take anywhere between two to eight hours to complete. Care must be taken so that the hair is implanted in the proper direction and angle.'
SPECIALISED TECHNIQUE
Dr Apoorva Shah, leading trichologist and founder Richfeel Health and Beauty says while this is not a very common procedure, there is some demand in India now. 'In fact, not just beard transplants, but eyebrow transplants too are in demand. This is more specialised than a regular hair transplant and special training is required for this procedure.
Strands of beard are extracted from the root using state of the art tools. Since patients are on local anesthesia, the procedure does not hurt and mostly there are no side effects,' he says, adding, 'The transplant uses natural hair ensuring no problem in maintenance.'
