It is the holiday season and we are busy reaping all benefits of party food, are neglecting its impact on health which can be easily avoided. The acid reflux, which President Obama was recently diagnosed with, has prompted this wide awareness about Holiday Heart burn.
What is holiday heart burn or acid reflux?
When acid located in the stomach enters the esophagus, it results inAcid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
What are its signs and symptoms?
Mukund Venu, gastroenterologist at Loyola University Medical Center said that signs of acid reflux disease include a burning sensation or pressure in the chest and/or throat, a persistent cough, burping and bloating.
What triggers this disease?
Constantly binging on 'holiday' favorites such as high-fat foods, alcohol, caffeine, chocolate and citric acid causes heart burn.
How to control or prevent this disease?
Lifestyle changes: Venu suggested that lifestyle changes are the first line of defense, so he advised to not to lie down until at least three hours after eating and people should sleep at 45-degree angle to keep acid in the stomach. (Read:10 simple changes to prevent acidity and heart burn)
Maintain good digestive health: Avoid caffeine and fatty foods, maintain a regular eating and sleeping cycle and prevent extreme weight fluctuation.
When to see the doctor?
Venu further mentioned that if people suffer from persistent heartburn that should see a board certified gastroenterologist and have an upper endoscopic exam performed. A proton pump inhibitor, liquid or pill, also helps in reducing the PRODUCTION of acid in the stomach. (Read:10 home remedies for acidity that really work!)
