Dattaji Nalawade, the former mayor and legislative assembly speaker Dattaji Nalawade, who survived multiple cardiac arrests, underwent a valve replacement involving without undergoing an open heart surgery. Doctors performed the Trans-Cautaneous Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) on Nalawade. He had suffered from renal failure, lung diseases and cardiac arrests.
In February, Nalawade was diagnosed with aortic valve stenosis, in which the aortic valve, which is responsible for heart flow from the heart to the rest of the body, calcifies and narrows down.
"His aortic valve had narrowed down due to degenerative changes in the valve. The TAVI procedure was best for him," said Dr Ashwin Mehta, director of cardiology and interventional cardiologist at Jaslok Hospital.
In TAVI, a replacement valve is passed through a hole in the groin by a puncture of the femoral artery and advanced up to the ascending aorta of the patient. It substitutes for a more invasive procedure in which the chest is opened. The survival is equivalent, but the risk of stroke is higher.
