Everyday drugs which are already being prescribed to treat high blood pressure, diabetes and skin conditions could be used to fight Alzheimer’s, according to a new report. Scientists say that the medicines already in circulation could be cheaper, quicker alternatives to ease the effects of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. ‘Defeating dementia is one of the biggest challenges facing both medicine and society as a whole. Developing new drugs is incredibly important but it comes with a huge price tag and, for those affected by dementia, an unimaginable wait,’ Professor Clive Ballard was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail. ‘Normally it takes 20 years and about $1 billion to get a drug that works, because so many compounds are dropped in trials due to toxicity and other problems,’ he said. ‘One of the advantages of this approach is you don’t have to start from scratch,’ he added. Clive Ballard, professor of age related diseases at King’s College London and director of research at the Alzheimer’s Society, said laboratory studies indicated liraglutide, a diabetes drug, protected nerve cells from build-up of amyloid proteins, which are thought to cause the brain disease. People who took nilvadipine, a blood pressure drug, were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s’, the studies showed. Also Read - Hypertension: Regulate blood pressure with these 5 yoga poses

Prof Ballard and others have drawn up the shortlist in an article in the journal Nature Nature Reviews Drug Discovery.

Rebecca Wood, chief executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said, ‘The idea that drugs for other conditions could fight Alzheimer’s is appealing. But it’s not yet clear that such a drug exists. Alzheimer’s is a complex disease with many risk factors.’

Prof Ballard warned Alzheimer’s sufferers against trying to obtain the drugs to self-medicate, because they had not yet been tested for the purpose.
