Rusul, an eleven-year-old Iraqi girl, has regained her sight thanks to doctors from Agarwal's Eye Hospital in Chennai. The girl who also suffers from juvenile arthritis, scoliosis and pigeon chest was brought to India on the recommendation of an Iraqi ophthalmologist.
'Prolonged use of steroids for her congenital condition caused inflammation and cataract in Rusul's eyes and she lost vision a year ago. We performed the Glued IOL surgery on her and now she can see clearly,' Dr Amar Agarwal, who performed the surgery on Rusul told TOI.
Rusul's parents, Raad Hussein and Iqdam Dawood were really worried about Rusul's condition and doctors in Baghdad had given up on her. 'Her bones are very delicate so she has to be carried everywhere. We were hoping to find a cure to her disorders when to our shock we realised she was gradually losing her vision when she was 8,' Raad Hussein told TOI. 'We removed her cataract lens and implanted an intraocular lens with glue. It was a real challenge and we ended up pumping anesthesia through her hand. The procedure took close to an hour as she was breathing heavily causing her body to move constantly during surgery. Despite the difficulties, the surgery was a success.', said Dr Amar Agarwal.
