In what could perhaps be one of the most effective ways of treating heart diseases, a non-invasive procedure enhanced external counter pulsation (EECP) is poised to be the next big medical offing in the state.

While traditional medication for heart ailments usually involve bypass surgery or the use of stents to correct blocked arteries, these procedures present a significant risk, besides being costly.

The need for cost-effective therapies for heart diseases is likely to be met by the EECP, which benefits the body by artificially emulating the benefits of exercise.

Although the EECP is not considered an alternative to traditional treatments, it may delay the need for these invasive procedures, and in many cases, relief will be sufficient to render them unnecessary.

The EECP is also administered on patients who are symptomatic after undergoing heart-bypass surgery and in those who have chronic heart diseases but are not candidates for surgery.

The procedure essentially involves placing leggings containing a series of pneumatic cuffs on the patient's legs.

These cuffs inflate and compress sequentially based on the heartbeat, sending extra blood to the heart and heart vessels, stimulating exercise.

The treatment takes approximately one hour, and is repeated over a series of about 35 daily sessions.

Through this procedure, the body will build new vessels around blocked parts of arteries, facilitating better blood flow, thereby improving the congestive heart failure.

In Karnataka, the EECP is offered at Enhanced Health Care located in Indiranagar 100ft Road. The consultant cardiologist of the facility, Dr GN Shirbur, says the treatment protocol effectively addresses the cardiovascular improvement in one simple solution.

The approximate cost for the treatment is about Rs95,000.

There are four centres in the city, run under the brand name Enhanced Hearts, where the treatment can be availed of. Enhanced Hearts holds the exclusive rights for vasomedical EECP in the state.

About 200 hospitals across India have adopted this technique. Medanta in Gurgaon, Frontier Lifeline Hospital (Dr KM Cherian Heart Foundation) in Chennai, BM Birla Heart Research Centre in Kolkata and Asian Heart Institute & Research Centre in Mumbai are some of the institution offering this procedure.
