Liberia received the experimental Ebola drug ZMapp from the US last week and started administering it to infected patients. Among all the patients, those who started receiving the treatment first, were three Liberian health workers. The medical professionals informed Wednesday that they are showing signs of recovery; however, experts still caution about the effectiveness of the drug. According to the ministry’s statement, the patients are showing very positive signs of recovery and their progress is remarkable. But even if it is really effective, the manufacturers of the drug in US said that more supplies of the drug won t be available for months from now.

The death toll in the current outbreak has now reached 1,200 including deaths in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. The only way to contain the outbreak till then, according to experts, is preventing the spread of Ebola in West Africa. The goal is to identify sick people, isolate them from healthy individuals and monitor everyone with whom they have been in contact.

What is ZMapp?

ZMapp is actually a mixture of antibodies that are designed to target and inactivate the Ebola virus. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDS), the drug is combination of three different antibodies produced by exposing mice to fragments of the virus. The generated antibodies were then extracted to make the drug. Natural antibodies produced in the body confer direct protection against the pathogen by attacking them directly. Similarly, these lab designed antibodies also attack the virus but in a specific way. The antibodies are designed such that they bind to a specific part of the virus and mimic the natural response of your immune system. They also develop active immunisation.
