Responding to the international emergency, several countries have contributed to prevent the spread of the Ebola disease as of now. US Secretary of State John Kerry in Washington released a fact sheet listing significant contributors to the UN Ebola response at a joint news conference. The United States with USD 113.8 million tops the list to the UN Ebola response. It is followed by the European Union (USD 55.5 million), Canada (USD 31.9 million), Netherlands (21 million) and India with USD 12.5 million. With that India is among the top five contributors to the UN Ebola response.

The World Bank has put in 22 per cent. The United States of America has put in 11 per cent. Private sector, 10 per cent, said Mr Kerry. ‘The fact is more countries can and must step up in order to make their contributions felt, and this chart tells the story. Those are not enough countries to make the difference to be able to deal with this crisis, he said in his presentation.

The United Nations, he said, is falling short of USD 300 million.

Here are five reasons why Ebola in India is a very scary scenario:

High rate of spread

The virus seems to spread very quickly from one human to another and it can spread through body fluids like blood, saliva, stool, urine, sweat, etc. This makes it extremely dangerous in a densely populated country like ours where it s easy to catch the virus while travelling, in offices or in any other public area. The disease can also spread through soiled clothing, bed linen or used needles.

High fatality rate

According to the WHO, EVD (Ebola Virus Disease) outbreaks have a fatality rate of 90%. Currently, there is no licensed treatment or vaccine for the disease, either for humans or animals. The only way to treat patients is to place them in ICUs and that too is very dangerous for healthcare workers or anyone coming in contact with the victims.
