Ebola in India

Regardless of the measured statistical risk of India to encounter an Ebola case in the next few months, the Indian government has maintained that there is no cause to panic and that the nation is prepared to tackle Ebola. Ebola precautionary measures are being strengthened in every possible way. Knowing that even a small mistake or negligence can lead to Ebola infection, the government is stressing the importance of training more and more staff to handle emergencies. On Sunday, the central government initiated a three-day training programme for Ebola health workers and caregivers New Delhi, as a part of emergency preparedness. The training programme was attended by health experts that are most likely to acquire Ebola infection from possibly infected passengers travelling from Ebola hit nations. These include microbiologists, epidemiologists and nursing staff from different health facilities that are set up at international airports. According to one of the senior health ministry official, the experts are being trained about handling protective gear and precautionary measures to be taken to avoid possible contact with body fluids of suspected patients. (What is the Ebola virus disease survival rate?)

Simple Ebola Travel precautions you should remember

  • If you re taking medication for any infectious diseases and if you re currently suffering from viral flu, you should avoid travelling before complete recovery. When you re suffering from an infection, your immunity weakens. This could be a good opportunity for the virus to attack you.
  • Older people, young peers and pregnant women should not travel at all. They have a high risk of acquiring infection.
  • Those who are travelling should be extra careful about their diet. Eat a balanced diet. Avoid junk food and under-cooked food, especially meat.
  • Avoid visiting areas that are too crowded and dense in population.
  • Following personal hygiene is must. Wash hands under running water for about one minute.
  • Those who have returned from their trip to places where Ebola is prevalent should also be equally careful. Although there are no cases in India yet, you need to be alert about the signs. If symptoms like fever, body ache, sore throat set in within a few days after travelling, seek medical opinion from a qualified doctor only. Do not take any of these symptoms lightly.
