An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on November 9, 2025, at 12:06 PM IST, according to the National Centre for Seismology. The epicentre of the earthquake was at 12.49 N latitude and 93.83 E longitude, at a depth of 90 km. The earthquake was recorded in parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands even though there were no major reports of casualties reported yet.

Meanwhile, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported the earthquake's magnitude as 6.07 on the Richter scale. According to GFZ, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles). On the other hand, the earthquake that struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands had a Richter scale magnitude of 5.5, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are among the world's most seismically active regions, classified as Zone V seismic zone. According to information published by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, it includes all of northeastern India, sections of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Gujarat's Rann of Kutch, parts of North Bihar, and the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Earthquakes that Occurred Recently

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck northern Afghanistan in Mazar-i-Sharif early Monday at around 2:00 a.m. IST, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 300.

According to the NCS, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 struck Leh last Saturday. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. "EQ of M: 4.1, On: 01/11/2025 17:42:26 IST, Lat: 36.69 N, Long: 75.51 E, Depth: 10 km, Location: Leh, Ladakh," the NCS stated in a post on X.

As per the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the preventive technique to adopt when in an earthquake is to drop, cover and hold on. As per the CDC, one must immediately get onto your hands and knees before the quake knocks us down. Cover your head and neck under a sturdy object like a table that won't fall on you. It is advisable to stay away from mirrors and other sharp objects. Hold on to the shelter till the shaking stops. Stay alert and safe.
