The festival of Navratri is here and it is an auspicious time for everyone. While people hailing from Gujrat celebrate it as a festival where there is garba and dandiya, the Bengalis celebrate it as the seven days of Durga pooja. For people from the south, especially Tamilians, this is when they celebrate Golu. A lovely festival where people decorate their homes with Golu -- which is a step-ladder like structure which has dolls and other artifacts depicting the godess and other animals. But what makes this day -- ashtami-- special is the fact that it is the eight and penultimate day of Navratri -- which demands special naivedyam or bhog to be offered to the godess. If you are celebrating this day with a lot of pomp and show, here is a simple and healthy recipe for kadalaparuppu pradhaman, a sweet meat that is soupy in texture and wonderfull to taste.

Made with lentils and jaggery -- this prasad is healthy and can keep you full for a long time. It is also perfect if you are to breaking your fast at the end of the day as it energises you and replinishes all your lost reserves.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chana dal
  • 1 medium chunk jaggery
  • 2 tsp ghee
  • cup coconut cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 tbsp cardamom (crushed)
  • 1 cup coconut milk

Method:

  • Cook the dal in a pressure cooker.
  • Once cooked, mash the dal really well.
  • Then melt the jaggery in hot water, strain and keep aside.
  • Now put a pan on flame and add the melted jaggery syrup. Keep heating the syrup on a low flame until it has a thick consistency.
  • Then add the mashed chana dal to the syrup and mix well.
  • Keep stirring and add the ghee to the mixture. Then add the coconut milk to the mixture. Stir continuously.
  • In another pan, fry some coconut pieces in a little ghee and keep aside for garnishing. Then add the coconut pieces and add the crushed cardamom. Your ashtami special dish is ready.
