India has an estimated 69.2 million diabetics; this figure is expected to grow by over 100% by 2030. Dr. Francesco Bandello, recipient of the 5th Public Endowment Award, will talk on proactively controling the epidemic of Diabetic Retinopathy on November 29, 2017 at Hall of Quest, Nehru Planetarium (Basement), Nehru Centre, Dr Annie Besant Road, Worli, Mumbai 400018 from5:30 PM 6:30 PM.
Dr. Bandello is MD, Head and Professor of Ophthalmology of Ocular Clinic, Director of the School of Specialization in Ophthalmology, Vita-Salute University, San Raffaele Institute, Milan and specializes in retinal diseases like diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degenerations, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiographies of different retinal vascular disorders. His lecture will address the very serious global concern of diabetic retinopathy and the crying need for early detection and prevention of this disease. Says Dr Bandello, "It is a proud moment for me to be receiving this Aditya Jyot 5th Public Endowment award and an excellent opportunity to put the spotlight on the evil of diabetic retinopathy and how it can be prevented."
On the occasion, the Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital will also launch a special 24x7 eye trauma centre in the city. Serving Mumbai for the past 27 years, the Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital have conducted 1500 plus camps since 2005, touching more than 8,50,000 lives with the help of 6000 plus free surgeries. Their 3 centres in the slum areas cater to 7000+ people annually. "Most eye injuries can be healed if care is given immediately. We observe so many cases where the injuries were reversible if only it had been detected on time. Every trauma patient should undergo a primary wound repair at the place of injury within 6 days. It can truly make the difference between blindness and light," maintains Dr. S. Natarajan, Chairman and MD of Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital. "Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital's 24/7 Trauma Centre is fully equipped for comprehensive eyecare services, especially in the case of trauma", he explains.
Aditya Jyot group of Institutions, on the occasion of 100th birthday of Dr.Natarajan's grandmother, is inaugurating free retina eye checkup for diabetic patients which will help in early detection and prevention of diabetic retinopathy in four locations , namely Wadala, Dharavi ,Kandivali and Mulund for the under privileged people.
