Narendra Dhabholkar, the founder of the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti was gunned down while he was taking his daily morning walk near Omkareshwar temple in Pune. Dabholkar was a well-known anti-superstition activist. He succumbed to his injuries in Sassoon Hospital in Pune. He actually had a degree in medicine and started working to eradicate superstition in 1983. He had also founded the de-addiction clinic called Parivartan in Satara.
In the past 20 years, he had confronted many babas, tantriks and other self-proclaimed godmen and also led agitations against various forms of superstitions, water pollution and animal sacrifices. Dabholkar, known for his campaigns against superstition, had for many years pushed for an anti-superstition Bill in the state assembly. Sadly, it seems like his battle to rid the society of superstition could have led to his untimely demise.
We as a society are extremely vulnerable to various superstitions many of them fuelled by godmen who make a hefty buck to make the bad luck go away. For years, it was believed that people who suffered from epilepsy and other neurological problems were possessed or that certain health problems were caused by 'black magic' or due to paap or actions committed during previous births. And of course it bodes extremely well for the godmen to keep the masses ignorant as reap the benefits of being the ones who can rid us of those problems.
