According to a report in a leading tabloid a doctor at Raksha Hospital in Malwani was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly abusing a patient and locking him up in a room after he failed to clear his hospital bill. Malwani police said the patient Ali Hasan Mohammad Yusuf, 52, had approached his family doctor for a gastric problem. He was asked to get a check-up done at the Raksha Hospital. Later he was admitted at the Raksha Hospital.
'I told the doctors that I couldn't afford to stay at the hospital for long and they assured me that I wouldn't be charged much. On October 5, they asked for a payment of Rs 8,000, which we made,' Yusuf said. On Tuesday, hospital authorities presented Yusuf with a Rs-28,000 bill, which he refused to pay.
Cops said Yusuf deposited Rs 5,000 at the time of admission. 'The patient had already paid Rs 13,000. When he said he could not pay more, the doctor locked him up in his cabin and abused and slapped him,' said senior inspector J K Hargure. Yusuf then contacted some social workers for help, who informed police.
'On reaching the hospital, we saw Yusuf had indeed been locked up. We arrested Dr Kabra. However, he was let off on a cash bail of Rs 9,000,' Hargure said.
'If the relatives file a formal complaint, we will conduct a detailed inquiry. It will also give a chance to the doctor to make a case for himself. Based on the findings of the inquiry, we may take action against the doctor,' said Dr Shivkumar Utture, executive committee member, Maharashtra Medical Council.
