A new study evaluated whether pregnancy weight management can affect a child's bone mass. Reportedly, in under/normal weight mothers, weight gain during pregnancy was linked to slightly increased bone mass at seven years of age in children, whereas in overweight/obese mothers, there was no beneficial effect of weight gain. According to Teresa Monjardino, lead author from the Universidade do Porto in Portugal, weight management strategies during pregnancy reduce child cardiometabolic risk like diabetes and heart disease. Reportedly, researchers observed that maternal weight has an overall positive correlation with a child's bone mass, pregnancy weight management can adversely affect child bone health.

Reportedly, the team analyzed prospective data from 2,167 mother-child pairs. The study, published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, revealed that in under and normal weight mothers, weight gain during pregnancy was tied to an increased bone mass in children who were of 7 years old.

Reportedly, while in the case of overweight or obese mothers, no beneficial effect of weight gain on bone mass was seen. According to Monjardino, till now, any weight gain from the mother during pregnancy would have a beneficial effect on children's bone mass, and it was a scientific belief. Thus, study results corroborate that there is no benefit in gaining weight.
