Maggi-Noodles

Looks like Nestle’s Maggi noodles cannot catch a break! Barely two years after FSSAI’s blanket ban on Maggi, the noodle brand is again in the news for failing another round of safety test. In June 2015, everybody’s favourite instant noodles was in the news for elevated levels of lead and MSG. Lab testing reports had revealed that the popular brand of fast food had lead content beyond the permissible limits of 2.5ppm. The district administration of Shahjahanpur UP has imposed a fine of Rs 45 lakh on Nestle for allegedly failing the lab test. Along with Nestle, three of its distributors and two of their sellers are also liable to pay Rs 15 lakhs and Rs 11 lakh as fine, respectively. According to authorities, the samples of Maggi noodles were collected last year in November and were sent for lab tests. The test results showed that noodles contained ash content that were, again, beyond permissible levels of human consumption. Here are all the questions about Maggi answered by experts! But the FMCG brand has shot back at these accusations by saying that incorrect standards were applied in the testing procedure. In a statement released to PTI, a Nestle spokesperson said, “While we have not received the orders passed by the adjudication officer, we have been informed that the samples are of year 2015 and the issue pertains to ash content in Noodles.”

He also added: “This appears to be a case of application of incorrect standards, and we will file an appeal urgently once we receive the order.” If the allegations turn out to be true, it would be a huge letdown of trust the public had reposed on Maggi as a brand post the lead fiasco. Because, in the wake of the allegations in 2015, Nestle had reiterated that Maggi Noodles were 100 percent safe for consumption.

If these allegations make you swear off Maggi for good, try some healthier alternatives to Maggi.
