Did you know one in 12 Indians is pre-diabetic? According to Dr Pradeep Gadge, Diabetologist, Gadge Diabetes Centre, Mumbai, the incidence of diabetes in metropolitan Indian cities could be anything between 1 in every 8 people suffering from diabetes. So according to current statistics, 1 in every 5 Mumbaikar is diabetic, which means there is a person with diabetes in every family or there is a diabetic in your neighbourhood. Given the deadly statistics, we still wait for the symptoms of diabetes to appear first then get it tested. And even after being diagnosed with diabetes, it is important to get a regular health check-up done. This is because it can help you avert many health complications caused due to diabetes, says Dr Pradeep Gadge. Here's your guide to life-saving tests for better health.

We tend to control diabetes and ignore other factors such as cholesterol, blood pressure and uric acid. Unlike other condition, people with diabetes are the best judge themselves as looking at reports you can know how well the condition is managed. But what most diabetics are unaware is the fact that diabetes is not just a disease of high blood glucose levels. In reality, there are other clinical parameters that must be checked. This includes checking your lipid profile, creatinine level, uric acid, SGPT and fatty liver. Fatty liver is one of the common reasons for liver failure in India and the condition is increasing. It is also one of the reasons for rejection of liver donors. Fatty liver might not be dangerous but because of alcoholic or non-alcoholic liver disease, the liver gets scarred gradually.
