Diabetes, one of the most common non-communicable diseases, has become a major health concern in many developing countries including India. As per International Diabetes Federation, India has become diabetes capital of the world with 40 million people living with diabetes. About 371 million people suffer from diabetes across nation and half of the cases are undiagnosed. Every year 4 million people die from diabetes.
In this context, Indus Health Plus released an abnormality report that revealed that a massive section of country's population suffers from diabetes the silent killer. In the southern cities like Bangalore, clear increase has been noticed in the age group of 25 30 years both in male and female. While 40% of cases are because of genetic reasons, 60% of the detections are because of change in their lifestyle. In Hyderabad, 15% of females are suffering from diabetes largely because of sedentary lifestyles and consumption of junk food and rice. (Read: Top diabetes myths busted (World Diabetes Day 2013))
In Mumbai, sugar levels were found to be high surprisingly amongst youth especially between the age group of 25 35 years of age. 35% of them were detected with diabetes. In Delhi a whooping increase of diabetes was observed in 39% of females. Increasing stress levels added to the risk of diabetes among Delhi women. Whereas in Pune, younger women in the age bracket of 30 35 years have been observed to have junk food and sweet eating habits which has definitely elevated the chances of diabetes in them.
In the study, it was observed that north Indians have sweet tooth and also the consumption of oil, ghee, butter is high which increases numbers in obesity, hypertension therefore fuelling chances of having diabetes. In the West, the changing lifestyle, wrong eating habits, MNC work atmosphere are the common factors for increasing level of diabetes. Whereas, in the South, the use of coconut oil, polished rise and sedentary lifestyle are major factors for increased level of diabetes cases. What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a metabolic disease which is characterised by high blood sugar levels. It can be caused either due to the lack of insulin (type 1 diabetes) or because the body's cells fail to respond to the insulin produced (type 2 diabetes). There's another form of diabetes that afflicts pregnant women called gestational diabetes.
Symptoms
In diabetes, the body is unable to absorb glucose which leads to a host of problems. Here are some of the symptoms that could indicate diabetes:
1. Increase in appetite
2. Frequent urination
3. Feeling too thirsty
4. Loss of weight
5. Feeling fatigued all day long
6. Frequent infections
7. Poor wound healing
8. High irritability/Depression
