Dengue Outbreak In Bangladesh: 8 More Deaths, Over 90,000 Cases Reported in 2025

Bangladesh faces a rising dengue crisis in 2025 with more deaths and fast growing infections. Health officials urge quick action as cases cross ninety thousand.

Dengue cases in Bangladesh continue to worsen, with infections and deaths rising significantly across the country. According to media reports, eight additional individuals died from the mosquito-borne sickness in the 24 hours preceding Sunday, bringing the total number of dengue deaths in 2025 to 364. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) recorded 778 new hospital admissions within the same time period, bringing the total number of dengue cases this year to 90,264, according to United News of Bangladesh.

The latest casualties included three from the Mymensingh division, two from the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), and one apiece from the Barishal, Dhaka, and Chattogram divisions. This year's DGHS figures show a noteworthy gender gap among patients: 62.3 per cent of those infected were men, while 37.7 per cent were women. Males accounted for 51.9% of deaths, while females made up 48.1%.

Dengue Cases Over Recent Years

Bangladesh has been dealing with rising dengue outbreaks in recent years. In 2024, the country experienced 575 deaths, while in 2023, an astonishing 1,705 individuals died from dengue, the greatest number on record.

What Is Dengue?

Dengue is a severe viral infection which is mainly caused by the dengue virus (DENV). The virus belongs to the Flavivirus family, which is the same virus family to which yellow fever, wesy nile virus, etc belong to. There are four different types of dengue virus, namely - DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4. All of these four types of dengue viruses are known for causing severe fever and immense strain on the immune system.

"After the virus enters the body, it first attacks the immune system, and this is when the person develops severe body ache, accompanied by fever and cripling headache," says Dr Prithvi Singh, Manipal Hospitals.

Dengue Symptoms

Here are some of the common symptoms of dengue:

  1. High fever
  2. Severe headache
  3. Pain behind the eyes
  4. Muscle and joint pain
  5. Nausea and vomiting
  6. Skin rash
  7. Bleeding tendencies

Dengue Prevention Tips

On November 6, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued a nationwide advisory in response to growing infections caused by Aedes mosquitoes. The circular urged individuals to seek medical assistance as soon as they noticed a fever and to have dengue detection tests, emphasising that early identification and treatment drastically lower the risk of complications.
