The number of dengue cases have been on a steep rise in the country, especially in the national capital. The number of positive cases have reached around 2000 so far in Delhi and the government is doing all it can to prevent the spread of this deadly virus. However, the efforts seem to be falling short somewhere, with ever increasing prices of dengue tests, lack of infrastructure and hospitals denying admission to patients. The Delhi High Court on Tuesday reserved its order on a PIL filed by Congress leader Ajay Maken accusing the Aam Aadmi Party government and municipal corporations of not being vigilant to control dengue. A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath said: The order is reserved. We will pass appropriate order on immediate steps to be taken to deal with the dengue outbreak. Maken, through advocates Aman Panwar and Mudit Gupta, told the court that the Delhi government allocated Rs.81.52 crore towards malaria and dengue control programmes but released 50 percent funds to municipal corporations on September 22, a day after the court s intervention. Five more people, including a 16-year-old boy, succumbed to dengue fever in the national capital on Tuesday. The number of dengue cases in 2015 is 5,000, highest in the last five years. While the number of official deaths still stand at 17, the unofficial toll confirmed by hospitals has crossed 70. Among the five patients, the first three patients included an eight-year-old girl from Mathura, a 13-year-old boy from Karolbagh, a 35-year-old woman from Sagarpur all died at Ram Manohar Lohiya hospital in the last 24 hours, while a seven-year-old girl succumbed to the vector-borne disease on Monday at the city s Safdarjung Hospital. Though the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which causes dengue, is found in abundance in the northeastern states, the deaths due to the disease are fortunately very minimal in the region, experts said here on Tuesday. During a recent official survey, it was found that in the urban and semi-urban areas of the northeastern states, the Aedes aegypti mosquito was found in abundant. However, the toll due to dengue is negligible in the northeastern states, Tripura health department official Pranab Chatterjee told reporters here. The national capital and its adjoining areas have recorded 5,982 cases of dengue till September 26 while the toll stands at 17, authorities said on Monday. Unofficially, the toll figure confirmed by media reports stands at over 60. The number of dengue cases recorded so far are the highest since 2010 over 6,000 in 2010, 1,131 in 2011, 2,093 in 2012, 5,574 in 2013 and 995 in 2014. Even the cases of death recorded this year are the highest in comparison to the same time frame. The number of dengue deaths in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 were, respectively, 8, 8, 4, 6 and 3. In an aggressive attack on dengue, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has slapped notice or initiated legal action against film stars and celebrities as well as commoners with equal zeal, officials said on Thursday. In the past nine months, the BMC has served notice to 13,587 people and initiated 866 legal cases against them for ignoring civic warnings and allowing mosquitoes to breed in their homes or neighbourhood. Of all the dengue victims, in 80 percent of the cases, the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which is responsible for spreading dengue, has been found in the homes or in the immediate vicinity. Besides, in 70 percent of the cases, mosquito breeding sites have been discovered in posh areas like Malabar Hill, Juhu etc., an official said. Read more...

With the dengue crisis looming all over the country especially the national capital, quacks have been making quick bucks by claiming that goat milk can help cure dengue. Following this news, the goat milk prices escalated to Rs 2000 per litre. A few days after this Yog Guru Baba Ramdev also advocated the use of herbs like giloy, aloevera and papaya leaves to cure dengue. Dengue has been wrecking havoc in the capital for a few months now. According to the latest reports, over 2000 positive cases have been reported till now with around 20 casualties. However, these figures seem to be a little spurious taking into consideration the reports from other private hospitals. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has confirmed 17 deaths so far whereas a private hospital in the Capital has confirmed 21 deaths alone with a dozen of patients belonging to the national capital. Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij on Tuesday said private hospitals cannot declare a patient as having dengue until that person s blood sample tests conducted at any government-run hospital confirm it to be positive. The government would soon issue a notification in this regard, he said, adding that few private hospitals in Haryana were confirming dengue fever on the basis of reports based on their own lab tests. There have been reports that a few private hospitals are spreading dengue scare to earn more from patients suffering from simple viral fever. The minister said the state government would soon issue a notification following which no private hospital would be allowed to claim a person to be dengue patient until it was confirmed by civil hospital test reports. There have been 3,791 dengue cases in the national capital, and 17 people have died due to the viral disease till September 19, the authorities said on Monday. The new figures released by the Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCD) prompted Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain to call for an emergency meeting of all municipal commissioners on Monday evening to decide on how to control the rising dengue cases. Delhi is under the dengue scare since some months now. There have been 3,791 dengue cases in the national capital, and 17 people have died due to the viral disease till September 19, according to the new figures released by the Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCD). The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notices to the Centre and the state government on a PIL accusing the AAP government and MCDs of not acting vigilantly and responsibly to control dengue, a mosquito-borne tropical disease. The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Congress leader Ajay Maken in the wake of dengue deaths and cases in the national capital. A division bench of Chief Justice G. Sep 18, 2015 at 03: 55 pm: Navin Patnaik launches 24x7 dengue helpline for Odia patients in New Delhi
After the death of two Odia people in New Delhi due to denial of treatment by private hospitals, the Orissa state government on Thursday launched a 24x7 helpline in New Delhi to help non-resident Odias (NROs) in getting medical assistance in the national capital, according a report in the Times OF India. Orissa Chief Minister Navin Patnaik tweeted bout this round-the-clock helpline- 011-24679201 which received at least seven complaints within two hours of launching.
It was also reported that over 2000 Odias in the Delhi are affected by dengue and most cases are reported from South Delhi. After the seven-year-old Avinash Rout died of dengue on September 7 due to denial of treatment by two private hospitals which was followed by the suicide of his parents, another Odia, Santanu Kumar Behera, of Soro in Balasore district, died of dengue in New Delhi late on Tuesday due to alleged medical negligence.

Two more deaths, suspected to be from dengue, have been reported in the national capital, taking the toll so far to 18. However, officially the dengue deaths stand only at five. Parents of a three-and-half years old Neha Mathur alleged that their daughter died on Wednesday due to dengue. But two city hospitals did not recommend dengue tests for the girl, they added. Sep 16,2015 at 10.07 pm: Delhi govt. caps dengue test at Rs 600 to prevent private hospitals from over charging patients
The Delhi government has also asked private hospitals to keep the dengue testing cap at Rs.600. 'We have come to know that private hospitals are overcharging for dengue tests. That is why we've decided to fix a cap on these tests for the private hospitals and laboratories. Nobody can charge anything beyond this rate,' said Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain. There are three tests for dengue -- NS1 antigen test, dengue antibody test and the platelet count test. The government has fixed a cap of Rs.600 each for the first two tests and Rs.50 for the platelet count test, the minister said. The state government has also instructed private hospitals to increase their bed count by 10-20 percent within a week.

The union health ministry on Wednesday said it was gearing up to tackle the recent spurt in dengue cases in the national capital and other states and asked municipal authorities to coordinate towards this end. Health Minister J.P. Nadda has been personally reviewing the status of dengue in the country, an official release said. In addition to this, several meetings have been taken with municipal bodies, Delhi government officials, Delhi Cantonment Board and directors of central government hospitals in Delhi to review the situation and preparedness to address and manage dengue and not allow it to escalate.
