The Delhi state government budget had some interesting healthcare developments. The state government seeks to provide a monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 to all poor HIV/AIDS patients. Orphaned children affected with the disease will get Rs 2,050 per month, while other children will get Rs 1,750 per month. The scheme was the key highlight of the Delhi govt's budget for 2012-13 health sector for which Rs 2,124 crore (14.16% of the total budget) has been assigned.
Delhi health minister AK Walia told a leading daily that 300 beneficiaries had already been identified for the assistance money "There are about 10,000 HIV/ AIDS patients registered with us for anti-retroviral treatment. These patients need extra nutrition and balanced diet to cope with their compromised immune system. The financial aid is aimed at helping such patients," said Walia.
Thalassemia patients will also get some relief with the exemption of VAT on 'blood bags' (lucocite filters) which will bring down the cost of blood storage and transfusion. Click here to find out more about Thalassemia a blood disorder.
The state government also intends to expand the ambulance fleet and the number if fialysis machines as well as upgrading the infrastructure at Delhi State Cancer Institute.
Most other budget proposals were however were however old proposals that had been mentioned in last year's budget but still hadn't been carried out yet; like the proposal to increase the number of beds per 1000 people to 3 from 2.55 beds or new state hospitals at Burari, Ambedkar Nagar, Hastal and Sarita Vihar.
