In India where rape cases are increasing in number with every passing day, it is quite obvious that every organisation and establishments should take adequate steps to ensure women safety and security. A radio cab service should have been at the best to do so, or so we think. However, the recent Uber rape case just brings to the forefront that we are still lagging behind in providing safety and security to our women. Here are few things that the radio cab service could have done, which could have averted this unfaithful incident:
Stringent background checking: Uber should have done a stringent background checking for the drivers that they hire. Reports say that they hired the accused without much of background checking, not even the most crucial and basic one a police verification. Interestingly, the accused presented himself as Gaurav to the victim and the records with the company have his name as Shiv Kumar. This has led to much confusion and is creating some trouble for the police to get hold of the accused.
Checking the phone details: Police reports also say that the mobile number that the accused was using wasn t registered under his name. So how was Uber even to trace the driver given any other untoward event?
No tracking service: It is learned that Uber does not fit cars on its service with a GPS tracker and solely relies on the driver s smartphone to track the car s location. Also, the cab service could not produce the call records of the accused as the server is located in the US. And the company s faith on the primitive tracking system failed when the driver had switched off his GPS-enabled phone, before ditching the car on Mathura Road. Had the GPS system indicated that the driver took a different route than that was schedule, steps could have been taken to safe the dignity of the victim, after being alerted.
So, where do we stand when it comes to security and safety of women in India? Is question should sit has hard at least now.
