A leading hospital in Delhi has reported that there has been an increase in neurological difficulties among post-Covid patients, including emergency cases of brain haemorrhage, according to the company. In a statement released by PTI on Saturday, the Moolchand Hospital stated it has been seeing "increasing cases of intracerebral (brain) haemorrhage, and 50 per cent of the neuroscience department is filled with such cases."

Dr Asha Bakshi, a senior neurosurgeon at Moolchand Hospital, said that majority of the cases are people who have had previously been infected with Covid-19 and have had a two- to three-month delay between infections. Adding to the statement, she stated that 37 of these patients reported headache as a symptom, and 26 per cent of them faced a loss of taste and smell.

Common Neurological Symptoms Reported By Covid Patients Post Recovery

Experts have stated that the pandemic has resulted in not only acute inflammatory disease, primarily affecting the lungs but also certain long-term neurological issues. Dr Bakshi said, "The most common neurological syndromes reported were acute encephalopathy (49 per cent), coma (17 per cent), and stroke (6 per cent). Presence of clinically captured neurologic signs or syndromes was associated with increased risk of in-hospital death."

The Moolchand Hospital also stated that up to 60% of patients in its out-patient department (OPD) had reported increased mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and feelings of loneliness, with the majority of these instances being post-Covid.

According to PTI, Dr Madhukar Bhardwaj, a neurologist at Aakash Healthcare Super Speciality Hospital, "The most common condition we have seen are migrainous headaches and post-Covid encephalopathy apart from proximal myopathy. The other rarer conditions included Guillain-Barr syndrome." She continued to say that the headaches are migrainous in nature, occur in younger age groups, and do not respond well to commonly prescribed migraine treatments.

Guillian-Barre Syndrome Also Reported As A Side Effect Of J&J Vaccine

Guillain-Barr syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological illness in which the body's immune system assaults a network of nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. Since the pandemic came into being, reports have suggested that viral infections such as Covid-19 can lead to several complications, including Guillain-barre syndrome. In severe cases, people may go from normal to a paralyzed state in a matter of 2-3 days, and in severe cases, breathing can be affected, needing ventilator support.

Following an ongoing evaluation of reports of a rare nerve condition in people who have received J&J vaccination, an advisory group to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that the advantages of COVID-19 vaccines "well outweigh" any dangers. Given the apparent relationship, individuals with a history of Guillain-Barr syndrome should seek out mRNA vaccinations, according to a recent update.
