Air Quality Decline Newborns Falling Sick Within Weeks ,Some Arrive With Asthma Symptoms
The deteriorating air quality in India is not merely an environmental issue, which has grown over time and become a looming national health crisis, particularly for the youngest and the most vulnerable citizens in the country. The concerning increase in the number of babies contracting serious respiratory diseases in a few days or weeks after birth is being reported by doctors in major cities. There are cases of infants indicating asthma immediately after they are born. This fact means that toxic air is permeating human health to a great extent, starting even at the time of being born.
New Infants Also Having Difficulty Breathing Since Birth
According to paediatricians, the babies supposed to be born healthy, full of energy and ready to grow are taken to hospitals with pneumonia like symptoms, incessant coughs and problems in their breathing. It is becoming disturbingly common in most units to find the babies connected to oxygen machines and nebulisers
According to the experts, the lungs of a baby are very delicate. In cases where the expectant mothers are exposed to contaminated air, the minute particles, particularly the PM2.5, are able to pass through the placenta into the fetus's lung development. This leads to babies being born with ineffective respiratory systems, hence exposed to infections. Physicians also report incidences of newborns developing symptoms of asthma early in life, such as wheezing, rapid breathing and chest tightness. The initial weeks of life are critical in the development of the lungs, yet in the countries where pollution is widespread, babies are breathing pollutants rather than clean air. This also exposes the infants to the risk of contracting pneumonia, which is among the major causes of infant death in India.
Air pollution is equally detrimental to all age groups, but small children especially, infants and young children are most affected, both physically and biologically. Their immune system is yet to be mature, their airways are smaller and they breathe more rapidly than adults that is, they breathe more contaminated air in proportion to their body weight.
The causes of increasing health complications in babies are several:
Lungs Are Underdeveloped
The lungs of babies develop very fast in their final trimester of pregnancy. This can be interrupted by the inhalation of pollutants by the mother.

Increased Breathing Rate
Infants breathe 30-60 times per minute, which is 12-20 times per minute in adults, exposing them to a large extent.
Poisonous Indoor Air
On top of the outdoor risk, there is indoor pollution by incense sticks, cooking fumes and cleaning chemicals.
Weakened Immunity
The bodies are not capable of combating allergens, bacteria or unfriendly air particles.
In very polluted areas, physicians indicate that children currently inhale the air that is equal to smoking several cigarettes per day. In the long run, this may lead to such chronic diseases as asthma, compromised lungs and poor cognitive development.
Although implementing policy adjustments, the use of cleaner fuels, and technology measures are necessary, personal precautions can be used to minimise the risk to the newborn. The recommended measures by doctors include the use of air purifiers at home, not going outside at peak hours when pollution is greatest, and making sure that the house is well ventilated. Essential precautions that expectant mothers undertake to keep the development of the fetus safe include wearing N95 masks and ensuring clean indoor air. Air pollution is not an environmental statistic anymore, it is a menace that is robbing the youngest among us of breath. Babies are forced to breathe polluted air as soon as they are born, and therefore, there is a need to act urgently and as one to counter the crisis.
