Delhi-NCR Air Pollution: Govt Revises GRAP Norms Amidst 'Poor AQI'; What Are The Major Changes?

Centre issues new revised GRAP policies in Delhi NCR to counter air pollution as Northern India descends onto peak winter period.

Delhi-NCR Air Pollution: Govt Revises GRAP Norms Amidst Temperature Drop; What Are The Major Changes?

Delhi NCR Air Quality Index remains poor as the city descends onto peak winter season. Amidst the temperatures drop the Commission for Air Quality Management (CQAM) has introduced a revised plan to control and combat air pollution in Delhi and NCR. It is a well known fact that as temperatures keep dropping, pollution levels will continue to rise. The new revised plan is meant to counter winter air pollution levels in the region. It is also a step to urge states to enforce stricter air pollution control measures as well.

GRAP Measures: What Is The Revised Plan?

According to the revised plan, the centre as urged the following pollution control measures:

  1. Schools are to operate in hybrid learning mode on the days when the AQI is poor.
  2. Inter-state buses from NCR states will be banned except electric vehicles (EVs) and those running on CNG or BS-VI diesel. This is as per GRAP stage II.
  3. New norm under GRAP Stage III will ensure that persons with disabilities are exempt from vehicular restrictions on using BS-IV diesel and BS-III petrol vehicles in Delhi, Faridabad, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar, Noida.
  4. Electric heaters will be provided to staff involved in sanitation, gardening and other essential services, including security personnel by resident welfare associations. This is to prevent open burning of biomass or waste during winter months.
  5. The Delhi government is expected to band diesel medium goods vehicles (MGVs) with BS-IV or older standards with an exception to the vehicles transporting essential goods within the city during Stage III.

Current Air Quality In Delhi NCR

The current Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi is still in the 'poor' category as of December 14th morning. As per reorts from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI at 7 am on Saturday was 212 and 277 as of December 13. In Delhi's Alipur, Anand Vihar, Bawana and Chandni Chowk, the AQI was recorded at 205,249, 278 and 168, respectively. In Dwarka Sec 8 AQI was recorded at 212, Nehru Nagar at 247, IGI Airport (T3) at 247, Rohini at 253, Pusa at 242 and Mundka at 264.
