Two days after five critical patients died due to lack of oxygen in ICU, two doctors, deployed to look after anaesthesia process, at Sushruta Trauma Centre have been terminated from service apart from suspending a medical officer (in charge, repair and maintenance) by the Delhi government on Thursday following a report submitted by the probe panel. The additional medical superintendent of the hospital has also transferred. The police added that they were talking to several hospital officials and anyone else found responsible would also be arrested.
'The services of two junior specialists Dr Richa Gupta and Dr Tina Khurana, in-charge of the anaesthesia department, have been terminated with immediate effect. Dr Anshuman, medical officer in-charge of maintenance and repair, has been suspended till further notice; and Dr Vikas Rampal, the additional medical superintendent of the trauma care facility, has been transferred,' said health minister Dr A K Walia.
The minister added that action was taken against the hospital staff as a problem in the oxygen supply was noted earlier but they failed to take any action, which would've prevented Tuesday's horrible incident.
Walia said the contract of PES Installations to maintain the gas pipeline system and provide manpower to run the same is being terminated with immediate effect. 'The company provides gas supply system to several other state-run hospitals. We are mulling over the termination of all contracts with them,' he said.
Two people appointed by the private company were also arrested on Wednesday.
'Till now, we have arrested the players on the ground and charged them with negligence, however, we are yet to identify and arrest the person (s) actually responsible for the fiasco and letting someone who couldn't clear his Class VIII exam handle the oxygen supply,' a police source said.
