It s been nine months since that horrific Delhi gang rape incident that shook the nation s core and as we await the verdict tomorrow there s a sense that the battle against violence against women is just beginning. The Juvenile Justice Board has also found the juvenile in the case guilty of rape and murder and sentenced him to three years in a reform home for juveniles, a move that has caused much heartburn all around the country.

A court will now decide the fate of the remaining four accused Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta (one of the accused Ram Singh committed suicide in his cell in Tihar Jail). The fast-track court is going to weigh the various charges against the accused murder, attempt to murder, unnatural offences, destruction of evidence, gang rape, dacoity among other charges. While the defence produced 17 witnesses, the prosecution present 85.

According to the police s version of events, the six accused had gang-raped the girl in the moving bus after luring her and her friend in as passengers. They were both assaulted with iron rods and the victim s friend suffered a fracture during the incident. Along with the statement of the eye witness the victim s male friend, the police also have forensic reports to back up their claims including DNA linked to the identity of each of the accused. The accused, however, still claim innocence and allege that the police tutored the victim s friend and falsely implicated them.
