35 new cases of dengue were reported on Sunday taking the total number to 652 'official' cases this season. Two people have passed away from the disease. "We are still getting 10-15 confirmed cases of dengue every day. In rare cases, the disease takes a fatal form when the platelet counts are severely low and there is internal bleeding," said a senior doctor at Sir Ganga Ram hospital. Doctors at Rockland, Max and Apollo hospitals also said they were getting many cases of dengue. The numbers might be significantly higher because many private hospitals do not notify the various municipal corporations about dengue cases.
Most private hospitals and nursing homes perform rapid tests for dengue, although the tests have been found to be effective, they are not accepted as legitimate under the government's rules, thereby excluding a large number of possibly confirmed cases. Another crisis that the states hospitals are facing is the unavailability of beds. Doctors are hopeful that once winter sets in the number of cases of dengue will drop drastically. At present almost 20-30 dengue cases are admitted to each private hospital, and government hospitals report a constant influx of patients with dengue-like symptoms.
