With 36 new cases on Friday, the number of dengue patients continued to go up in the national capital, official data said. With this, the total number of people suffering from the mosquito-borne disease has touched 1,608. Also Read - Previous exposure to dengue may provide some immunity against COVID-19

Of the 36 new cases, 10 each are in North and East Delhi Municipal Corporations and rest 16 from South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). Since dengue hit the capital this year, SDMC has reported the maximum number of cases at 610. There have been four deaths so far. Apart from Delhi, 12 dengue cases originated from neighbouring states pushing the total to 1,620. In 2011, a total of 891 dengue cases were reported in Delhi, down from a total of 5,769 cases in 2010.
Officials said the unusually high figure in 2010 followed massive construction activity for the Commonwealth Games, which pulled in workers from neighbouring states and also created stagnant pools of water for mosquitoes to breed. Also Read - Avoid these foods if you have dengue fever

Dengue fever is a communicable disease, and its symptoms include high fever for four to five days, usually accompanied by severe headache, pain in the eyes, muscles and joints and rashes. After the fever goes away, the blood platelet count starts dipping. This is the most dangerous phase of the disease, and can lead to fatal multi-organ failure, say doctors.
