Delhi Battles Worst Swine Flu Outbreak: Influenza B, H1N1 Cases On The Rise, Doctors Warn Against Ignoring Fever, Cough
Delhi Swine Flu Outbreak: The national capital is battling the worst Swine flu (H1N1) virus outbreak in years. According to the latest data, over 54% of households in the Delhi-NCR region has reported atleast one memeber suffering from symptoms associated with swine flu or influenza A. "54 per cent of the houses in Delhi-NCR has at least one member with symptoms include headaches, persistent coughs, fatigue, mild fevers, and other respiratory issues."
This sudden spike in cases has affected individuals across various age groups, prompting health experts to advise the public against dismissing symptoms such as fever and cough. Speaking to the media, Dr Rommel Tickoo, Director, Internal Medicine, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Delhi, said a rise in influenza-like illness cases was registered over the last month. "It's a bad strain of flu. I have seen a mixed bag Influenza A, B, H1N1, H3N2, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) that causes infection of the lungs and respiratory tract. In certain cases, even tests are not able to confirm but it is an influenza-like virus," he said.
Experts have highlighted that the most concerning part of this outbreak is that the recovery period for these ailments has extended beyond the typical 5-7 days, with many individuals experiencing symptoms for up to 10 days.
H1N1, also known as swine flu, is a subtype of the influenza A virus -- which is known to be the most infectious version of the virus. The first outbreak, which shook the world, dates back to 2009, when the swine flu pandemic struck the human world. Some of the warning signs include seasonal flu, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills, and fatigue. In severe cases, H1N1 can lead to pneumonia and other respiratory complications.
Influenza B, on the other hand, is one of the primary types of influenza viruses that cause seasonal epidemics. While it generally leads to milder infections compared to influenza A viruses, it can still result in significant illness, particularly among vulnerable populations such as young children and the elderly.
"Upper respiratory tract infections, high-grade fever across age groups, and cough and fatigue lasting a couple of weeks are common symptoms that patients have been complaining about," an expert was quoted as saying.

Speaking to the media, doctors who are handling these cases have warned that the disase is affecting people from all the age group. "Children, adolescents, adults, elderly, everyone is getting affected by the currently dominant strain of H1N1 virus".
cMany patients require nebulizers or inhalers for relief, and some need oral steroids to manage their symptoms. While a strain mutation could be a possible cause, further analysis from virologists is needed for confirmation.
