Delhi News: In the last 24 hours, the national capital has witnessed a massive spike in swine flu virus infection cases, with reports showing that a concerning 54 per cent of the household have one or more individuals showing swine flu (H5N1) symptoms, such as fever, sore throat, cough, headache, stomach issues, joint pain, and respiratory problems.. These symptoms closely resemble COVID-19, raising public concern and overwhelming healthcare facilities. Doctors and health experts are urging citizens to take necessary precautions as hospitals see an influx of patients with high fever, persistent cough, sore throat, and body aches.

With seasonal infections peaking and air quality playing a crucial role in exacerbating respiratory issues, authorities have stated that the Delhi Health Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and checking for any unusual surge.

Delhi Sees Massive Spike In Viral Cases: All About The Outbreak

Over the past few weeks, the national capital has seen a sharp surge in swine flu (H1N1) cases, alarming both health officials and the general public. According to the data, hospitals across the state have reported an increased number of patients, mostly presenting swine flu symptoms that closely mimic COVID-19. While many cases are confirmed to be swine flu, the similarity of symptoms has fueled panic and uncertainty. Speaking to TheHealthSite.com, Dr. Rajeev Malhotra, a senior pulmonologist at a leading Delhi hospital, stated, "This year, we are witnessing an unusual spike in H1N1 cases. Many patients present with high fever, severe fatigue, and prolonged cough, making it difficult to distinguish between swine flu and COVID-19 without proper testing."

Experts have also added that the current outbreak is considered to be the worst one in years because earlier, the illness used to last five to seven days, but now it is lasting about 10 days. Another important difference is that people are experiencing shortness of breath, chest congestion, and wheezing. Earlier, flu-like episodes would consist mainly of cold, cough, and fever. People are experiencing what is called post-flu bronchial hyperactivity, where they are dealing with a prolonged cough. This cough can be very disturbing; it prevents them from sleeping at night, and they are unable to participate in their usual professional activities due to this persistent cough. This is a notable difference as compared to previous seasonal patterns. This kind of wheezing or prolonged cough usually requires nebulizers, bronchodilators, or inhalers, unlike in previous years when people mainly managed with rest and symptomatic treatment

Recent data has also revealed that the illness has been affecting people of all ages, though those above 50 years, young children, and individuals with pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, COPD, and cardiac issues are particularly vulnerable. According to the survey, "hospitals are reporting more admissions of people with pneumonia and bronchitis due to severe infections."

What Is Swine Flu: Why Is Delhi Witnessing This Sudden Surge?

Swine flu (H1N1) is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by the influenza A virus. Just like any other virus infection, the swine flu virus also spreads via the respiratory droplets of an infected individual. Some of the signs of Swine flu virus infection include -- high fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue.

Delhi is experiencing a sudden surge in cases due to seasonal changes, poor air quality, and increased human interaction in crowded spaces. The post-COVID-19 weakened immunity and low vaccination rates have further contributed to the outbreak. Health experts advise vaccination, mask-wearing, and proper hygiene to curb the spread of this viral infection.

What Is the Delhi Government Doing?

Delhi's healthcare system is on high alert as hospitals deal with an overwhelming number of flu cases. According to the latest data, the government has increased testing efforts to avert any unusual outbreaks. The Delhi government has also launched awareness campaigns to help people understand how to stay protected, some of them include:

  1. Frequent handwashing with soap
  2. Wearing masks in crowded areas
  3. Avoiding unnecessary social gatherings
  4. Getting vaccinated against H1N1 influenza

Hospitals are stocking up on antiviral medications, and special flu clinics have been set up to manage the rising patient load. Authorities are urging people to seek medical care immediately if they experience persistent fever or difficulty breathing.
