Delhi Weather Report: Dense smog engulfed Delhi and its surrounding areas on Wednesday morning with visibility dropping and the air quality settling in the "very poor" category.According to data by the Central Pollution Control Board, the city's air quality index (AQI) was at 361 at 8:00 am. However, the Aya Nagar station reported the worst air quality with the AQI at 417 (severe), followed by Anand Vihar at 399 (very poor).

In its latest warning, the weather department has stated that these severe weather conditions are unlikely to improve soon, with the AQI predicted to remain in the "very poor" range for the next two days. Meteorological conditions are still "extremely unfavourable" for pollutant dispersion.

AQI: What Is It?

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is an important tool that shows how polluted the air is in a certain area. It helps us understand both the current state of air pollution and any predictions about it. In cities like Delhi, where air quality can change quickly, knowing the AQI is essential for everyone's health. The scale ranges from 0 to 500; higher numbers indicate worse air quality and increased health risks. Keeping an eye on the AQI allows residents to take precautions to protect their health, particularly during episodes of serious pollution.

Currently, Delhi is experiencing dangerously high AQI levels, often classified as 'very poor' or 'severe.' This uptick in pollution is largely due to several factors, such as vehicle emissions, industrial waste, and the burning of seasonal crops in nearby states. With winter's arrival, the problem worsens due to temperature inversions that trap pollutants near the ground, creating dense smog. People are advised to stay updated on AQI readings daily so they can make informed choices about outdoor activities.

What Happens To Your Health Under POOR AQI?

Being exposed to high air pollution can cause quick health issues. You might find yourself dealing with symptoms like irritated eyes, coughing, and a scratchy throat. Those who already suffer from respiratory conditions, like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), face even more dangers. Furthermore, children and older adults are particularly susceptible, making it imperative for families to stay vigilant about air quality.

Living in polluted air over time can lead to serious health problems. Research has connected long-term air pollution exposure to respiratory illnesses, heart diseases, and even issues related to the nervous system. The tiny particles (PM2.5) found in smog can easily get into the lungs and bloodstream, resulting in health complications down the line. Understanding these risks highlights the necessity of protective measures against air pollution.
